Greatest Baker 2023: A Sweet Success Benefiting the B+ Foundation

Colossal proudly concludes the 2023 Greatest Baker competition, a remarkable online campaign that not only celebrated the artistry of dedicated bakers but also raised an astounding $2.2 million for the Andrew McDonough Be Positive Foundation. This annual fundraising campaign continues to make a substantial impact in supporting families of children with cancer and funding critical childhood cancer research. This year's winner, Sara Husein, stands out not only for her baking prowess but also for her dedication to shaping a sweet future.

Colossal's Impact on Pediatric Cancer

For years, we have been fervent supporters of the Be Positive Foundation's mission. Previous funds raised through the Greatest Baker competition have significantly contributed to providing financial and emotional support to over 3,200 families nationwide. Joe McDonough, president of the B+ Foundation, expressed his heartfelt appreciation, emphasizing how this generosity has been life-changing for families facing the unimaginable challenges of pediatric cancer.

He shared with us, "You lessen the financial burden so that they can focus on what is truly most important: their child's life-or-death battle. All kids should have an equal chance of beating their cancer and getting a chance to grow regardless of their parent's income. And, you make this possible."

Sara Husein: The 2023 Greatest Baker

The highlight of the competition was the crowning of Sara Husein, a culinary student from North Carolina, as the 2023 Greatest Baker. Husein's passion for baking, coupled with her exceptional skills, earned her a $10,000 cash prize, a feature in Bake from Scratch magazine, and an exclusive meet-and-greet opportunity with the renowned "Cake Boss" himself, Buddy Valastro.

Currently pursuing an associate's degree in baking and pastry at the Culinary Institute of America, Husein has aspirations of furthering her education with a bachelor's degree in business, aiming to open her own bakery and make a mark in the baking industry.

Critic's Pick: Leilanie Todd

During the competition's quarter-finals, Melissa Anaya viewed hundreds of sweet submissions for the Critic’s Pick, with Leilanie Todd, a skilled pastry chef and owner of Brown Butter Bakery in Oakland, California, taking the title. Anaya, an AZ foodie and influencer, awarded Todd the title of Critic's Pick for her extraordinary ramen-inspired cake. Todd's talent will be showcased in Bake from Scratch magazine, and she will also indulge in a culinary adventure at Anaya's favorite bakery.

Buddy Valastro's Influence

Buddy Valastro, the beloved "Cake Boss" and master patissier, added a touch of celebrity flair to the competition. His cake-decorating workshops and insight enriched the journey for all participants, providing invaluable guidance and inspiration to aspiring bakers.
